Temporary power connection do's and don'ts

Do’s:

  • Be sure to pick up a work permit from the person in charge of the site and do a Toolbox Talk.
  • Any electrical work is to be performed by a licensed electrician.
  • All the apparatus should be flameproof.
  • For three-phase power, the equipment shall have double neutral earthing.
  • An earth-leakage circuit breaker must be used in all the apparatuses.
  • All equipment shall have a current rating not exceeding 30 AMPS.
  • Check for the correct rating, Direct Online Motor Starter on each machine.
  • One of the Main power connections should use good-quality armored cable.
  • Should cables be lying in the street, road crossing, or pedestrian areas must be covered and concealed in order to render them resistant to mechanical assaults.
  • Always use non-jointed cables.
  • Cables above ground should be stretched as far as is practicable.
  • At all times, keep connections clean, dry, and tight.
  • Turn off any power supplies to the feeder pillar as soon as the equipment is not in use on a daily basis.
  • If you don’t need temporary power, tell the maintenance person after you have landed the job.

Don’ts:

  • Never use a power supply higher than 24 V in a cramped area.
  • Unarmored cable shall not be laid down defensively.
  • Twist or carry connections between two wires.
  • Do not site a temporary feeder pillar close to water.
  • Don't sublet a temporary connection to another contractor.
  • Do not apply a load before informing the electrical maintenance department of the use of a temporary electric source.
  • No unauthorized electrician at the job site.
